Default Bonafide Issue 5 out now / launch party @ XOYO

Bonafide set out with the aim to celebrate ‘old-school, mid-school and new-school creativity’, five issues on we’re proud to present the old school x new school issue. In hip-hop chronological order we speak to the Godfather of it all, Grandmaster Flash, profile EPMD, the funky Long Island duo from the golden age of rap and get crazy with ‘the lazy hustler’ and fourth Beastie Boy, Ricky Powell. Still in NYC, we speak to leading voice for alternative hip-hop, EL-P, who, nearly 15 years on from the release of the Funcrusher Plus (as part of Company Flow), reveals that there’s plenty of drive left in the tank. From the West Coast we catch up with the revered turntablist and Beat Junkie, J Rocc.

In the new-school side of the magazine, we break bread with those responsible for some of the most exhilarating new sound in British urban music. We have exclusives with DELS and Ghostpoet as they launch their careers with original and nuanced albums. For this issue’s rountable we speak with the men behind Numbers, the Glasgow based record label that has rewritten the rulebook on how techno, electronic, R’n’B and house and (in the case of offshoot label, Luck Me) hip-hop music should sound. And the resulting mutant strain of bass music is destroying dance floors the world over. On the visual side, we delve deep into the Brainfeeder psyche, speaking with designer and artist Charles Munka about his contribution to the label’s distinct art direction.

The first 100 issues bought via the Bonafide shop will receive a redeemable code for a free copy of DELS’ Gob EP, including the original single and remixes by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, Untold and Ry9n.

You can buy Bonafide in the TATE Modern bookshop, Rough Trade, Fopp, Magma, all good online and physical records stores and for the first time, HMV. Alternativel you can buy Bonafide direct through our shop here

We’re teaming up with Soundcrash for a launch party and to help raise money for Japanese earthquake relief. DJ Kentaro, Smerins Anti-Social Club and Mr Thing in room 1 whilst we’re very excited to hos the Ian Drury of rap, Infinite Livez and bright young thing Bullion in room 2, not to forget our very own ‘press-play-and-stop’ CDJ specialists who are bound to unnerve Kentaro.

Infinite Livez has also provided us with a Japan themed mix, listen and ticket links below.

Bonafide Vol 16/ Mexicans With Guns Exclusive Mix

For volume 16 of Bonafide Beats we’re proud to present one of the most exciting and enigmatic new members of the US beat scene, Mexicans with Guns. Ernest Gonzales, the man behind the mask, was born in San Antonio though his amorphous, bass heavy music has found a natural home in LA, with headline shows at Low End Theory and debut LP Ceremony released on the Stones Throw associated Innovative Leisure label.

The Freddie Gibbs and Bun B featuring Highway to Hell caused plenty of ripples in the blogosphere a few months back and MwG’s mix for Bonafide is dominated by his own similarly emotive and aggressive productions. Mark this guy firmly in the ‘one to watch’ category.

Listen to the mix and download it here!

    MWG – Opening Incantation
    MWG – Deities
    MWG – Obsidian
    MWG – Restart
    Robot Koch – Devil Drums
    MWG – Jaguar
    MWG – Precession
MWG – La Luna y El Sol
    MWG – DJ Orion
    MWG – La Guitarra
    MWG – Los Perritos
