During my childhood i was exposed to all types of music, ranging from local kenyan music to italian ballads. Between the ages of 11 and around 14 I was into pop, soft rock and some R&B, later on my taste shifted to Rap, Hip Hop and Reggae.
At the age of 16, i was introduced to EDM by a close friend Akaash Patel (DJ Foozak), and thats when it all started. Being the only person in my boarding school that liked house, trance and other genres of electronic music, i made it my mission to spread the love. Day by day my love for house grew and with it so did my collection. I would share my downloaded tracks with the people around me and I kept getting the same response: “Eugi u should DJ”. I always thought it would be too hard for me to do and that it was only for a “special” type of person.
Being a computer fanatic and someone who spent hours and hours online, downloading software and fooling around with my computer, i stubled across Virtual Dj, and thats when it all began, i though to myself: “if he can do it, then so can I” So i made and released my first mix, Orange Torch Vol 1, at this time i still didnt have a DJ name or really know what i was doing. So i sent my mix to a couple of people and asked for thier opinions. My mixing was off, but the public loved my song choice, so that kept me going.
I made a few mixes after that, each time getting tips and constructive critisism from some of the big DJ’s, who i thank for thier support till this day.
Slowly by slowly my mixes and transitions got better, and so i took the next step and progressed to entry level DJ equiptment, using a Torq Xponent. I started doing a few gigs, at 40 Thieves, and The Loft, which went well and gave me the push to progress even further.
I realised that if i wanted to reach my goal, being the best DJ to come out of Kenya and to spread my style of music to the people, i would have to move up to proper Turntables such as CDJ’s.
After a couple months I borrowed a pair of decks from a friend and locked myself up with them for about a week, watching online tutorials and reading manuals, and that was how i learned to use decks.
From then on, i started getting more and more gigs, and more people started noticing me, in which case I had to create a DJ name. I chose Donnaccia, which is the italian translation of “manwhore” which is what my boys used to call me back in high school due to my interactions with the opposite sex…
And from then my musical taste has matured to less common music such as Dubstep, Dirty Dutch while still keeping the beautiful melodies from progressive house, techno and occasionally hints of Dirty house and electro, while keeping away from the commercial side of EDM.
Currently I am working on the production aspect of EDM, and have paired up with Sean Peevers who already has a background in music production to create “Panda Fish” dum dum dum duuuum!!!
